A yet-to-be-identified gunmen struck on Sunday night, targeting a patrol vehicle near the Afor Umuaka Market and Hilltop Primary School in Umuaka Community, Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, they opened fire, resulting in the tragic deaths of three vigilance operatives and a passerby hit by a stray bullet.
Describing the incident as a “devastating ambush,” a community leader, who spoke anonymously, highlighted the ongoing siege faced by Umuaka and neighboring communities from gunmen and kidnappers.
Recent criminal activities, including the establishment of camps in nearby Ezioha Community, have heightened tensions.

He revealed that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Aboki Danjuma, has deployed a Tactical Squad to apprehend the perpetrators, emphasizing the commitment to justice and extending condolences to the bereaved families.
“CP Aboki Danjuma expresses sadness over the unfortunate incident and vows to leave no stone unturned to ensure that the perpetrators were all arrested and brought to justice.
“He empathised with the families of the deceased victims and prayed for the repose of their souls,” the police spokesman said.
Okoye urged residents of Njaba and surrounding areas to provide any relevant information to aid the investigation, encouraging them to contact local police stations or use emergency hotlines 08034773600 or 08098880197.
