Troops of the Nigerian Army stationed in Yobe State for counter-terrorism operations have successfully foiled an attempt by Boko Haram terrorists to sabotage high-tension electric pylons.
In a statement posted on X on Sunday, the Army reported that troops, along with hunters, ambushed the terrorists en route to damage the infrastructure, following credible intelligence.
Recently, there has been a surge in attacks on electricity infrastructure, resulting in blackouts in affected regions.
Notably, on December 28, 2023, terrorists used improvised explosive devices to destroy three electricity towers—T193, T194, and T195—in Borno State. Additionally, in June 2024, vandals targeted towers T193 and T194 along the 330 kilovolts single circuit transmission line in Borno State.
Concerned by these incidents, the Federal Government has shown interest in creating a specialized “power rangers” unit to protect the country’s power infrastructure.
In a recent operation near Kasesa village in Yobe State, troops, aided by local hunters, thwarted another planned attack on the nation’s electricity infrastructure. The Army detailed the operation in a statement on Sunday, posted on X.
“Troops of the Nigerian Army deployed for counter-terrorism operations in Yobe State, in collaboration with local hunters’ group have thwarted an attempt by ISWAP/Boko Haram terrorists to destroy high tension electric pylons near Kasesa Village at the outskirts of Damaturu town,” the statement said.
Acting on credible intelligence, the troops ambushed the terrorists en route to the pylons in a suspicious vehicle.
The ensuing firefight forced the terrorists to abandon their vehicle and flee with gunshot wounds. The Army recovered eight IEDs from the scene.
“Upon searching the vehicle, the troops discovered eight improvised explosive devices (IEDs) with detonating cords, along with a trade test card belonging to one Emmanuel Adamu,” the statement continued.
The swift action by the troops and hunters averted a potential disaster and protected the region’s electricity infrastructure.
The Army highlighted the operation as evidence of the security forces’ commitment and vigilance in fighting terrorism and ensuring community safety in Yobe State.
“The quick and decisive action of the troops and hunters prevented a potential catastrophe and safeguarded the electricity infrastructure in the region. The successful operation is a clear pointer to the dedication and vigilance of the security forces in combating terrorism and ensuring the safety of the local communities in Yobe State,” the statement added.
