An unidentified middle-aged man reportedly committed suicide by jumping into the Gbodofon River in Osogbo, Osun State.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria. The incident occurred at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Witness Muri recounted overhearing the man expressing despair in Yoruba, saying, “ile aye ti su” (I am tired of this life), before leaping over the bridge railings into the river.
Efforts to rescue the man by the Osun State Fire Service were unsuccessful.
Spokesperson for the State Fire Service, Mr. Ibrahim Adekunle, confirmed to NAN that their teams from the Okefia and Abere stations were dispatched immediately but were unable to locate the man due to the elevated water level and strong current caused by recent rainfall.
“Our stations at Okefia and Abere deployed personnel immediately to the scene when we were informed about the incident. However, our officers were unable to rescue the man because of the water level, which has gone up due to the downpour,” Adekunle explained.
He emphasized that suicide is not a solution to any problem.
