A Federal High Court, Kubwa, Abuja today, June 15, 2022 had ordered a 30-year-old member of the National Youth Service Corps, Chibuike Omemgboji, to clean the premises of the Winners Chapel, Jahi, Abuja for six months.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Omemgboji pleaded guilty to a cheating suit filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and prayed the court for leniency.
When delivering his ruling, Justice Kezziah Ogbonnaya, ordered Omemgboji to report to the church daily from June 15, and sign in and out upon completion of the cleaning service.
Omemgboji was however warned to desist from committing crimes and be of good behaviour.
The Defence Counsel, Mr Eteh Enobong, had prayed the court to be lenient with its judgement on Omemgboji, saying he had no previous conviction in Nigeria or abroad and was remorseful and repentant.
”Omemgboji repented before he was arrested and revealed his true identity to the victim, apologised and attempted to make restitution, and has started a new business with his wife.
”He has decided to forfeit a Honda Accord car and an iPhone X, being proceeds of the crime, to the Federal Government of Nigeria, ” Enobong said.
Enobong further states that Omemgboji is a family man who has a baby and was the sole provider for his family.
Counsel to the EFCC, Mariya Shariff had earlier told the court that Omemgboji, a.k.a Surajo Ascencio, fraudulently created a Facebook and Instagram account sometime in 2022.
Shariff said Omemgboji under false identity of ”Ascencio” received $4,328 from one Sarah Vakunta lying of being in love with her.
The offence, she argues, contravened the provisions of Section 320 of the Penal Code and was punishable under Section 322.
