Two lives were tragically lost early on Monday morning when a passenger bus collided with a truck along the Sagamu-Benin Expressway.
According to The PUNCH, spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, made this known in a statement on Monday.
He said, “The vehicles involved were an unregistered Howo truck and a Toyota Hiace Bus with registration number BEN 823 ZW.”
Akinbiyi explained that the accident was caused by speeding on the part of the bus driver, resulting in loss of control and a collision with the truck.
He stated, “There is a road traffic accident at Area Command hill, Inbound Ijebu Ode, on Sagamu-Benin Expressway at about 0630hrs on 01/07/2024.”
Eyewitnesses reported that the bus driver’s excessive speed led to the tragic incident, involving a total of 20 individuals, including 15 males and five females.
Akinbiyi confirmed, “The victims are 15 males and five females with four injured and two dead.”
He also noted that the deceased victims were taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital morgue, while the injured were transported to the same hospital for treatment. “Accident victims have been rescued to OOUTH while the bodies of the two dead victims were deposited at OOUTH morgue,” Akinbiyi added.
