The Jigawa State Police Command has confirmed that herdsmen attacked four communities in Birninkudu, Dutse, and Kiyawa Local Government Areas.
According to The PUNCH, a statement issued on Saturday by the Spokesperson for the State Police Command, DSP Lawal Adams, disclosed that eight people sustained injuries and have been hospitalized at Dutse General Hospital in the state capital.
The statement detailed, “Information revealed that herdsmen in large numbers armed with bows and arrows, matchets and sticks invaded Baranda village and attacked the villagers. The villagers rose up in defence of themselves, resulting in the injuries of eight of them. They were rushed to the Dutse General Hospital for medical attention.”
In response to these attacks, Jigawa State Police Commissioner Ahmed T. Abdullahi, accompanied by the Squadron Commander of 35PMF Dutse, Area Commander Dutse, and Divisional Police Officers of Dutse and Kiyawa Divisions, visited the affected villages of Kalai, Waza, Baranda, and Katanga. The visit aimed to address the hostilities between farmers and herders, which had resulted in injuries and destruction of farmlands.
Adams noted that the Police Commissioner conducted a meeting with both herders and farmers to emphasize the importance of cooperation, tolerance, and mutual understanding.
“The Commissioner of Police interacted with the major stakeholders of both herders and farmers on the need for collaboration, synergy, tolerance, and understanding of each other and also on the need to avoid taking laws into their own hands and to report any wrongdoing of mischief, encroachment of cattle route and others offences to the nearest Police Station or other security agencies for immediate action,” the statement added.
This incident follows a recent ceremony held in Kabak village, Kirikasamma Local Government Area, by the Jigawa State Government, which celebrated the restored peace and confidence between herdsmen and farmers in the state.
