Harry Kane has convened a team meeting following England’s lackluster performances in their first two matches of Euro 2024.
According to reports, the captain gathered his teammates for a discussion without the presence of coaches, the morning after a 1-1 draw that some have called the team’s worst performance under Gareth Southgate.
Despite securing four points from their first two games, England’s start to the tournament has been disappointing.
The Three Lions managed a narrow 1-0 win against Serbia in the opening match and struggled to a 1-1 draw with Denmark.
The team’s lackluster performance has drawn criticism from fans and pundits, who have questioned their commitment to the competition.
In response, Kane decided a motivational talk was necessary ahead of their next game on Tuesday.
The Sun reported that the England captain organized a private meeting for the remaining members of the 26-man squad without the coaches.
Kane reminded his teammates of their ability to win the Euros, hoping to resolve any disagreements and strengthen their unity.
During a recent training session, tensions flared between Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker, who had a verbal altercation despite previously joking around.
Manchester City defender Walker seemed to offend Trippier of Newcastle, but Walker’s club teammate Phil Foden intervened to calm things down.
Following these events, Kane made several efforts to inspire the players.
A source stated, “Harry is a natural leader and wanted to gee the lads up after Denmark. That game left the whole country feeling a bit flat, never mind just the players. Harry wanted to remind them how good they are.
“He urged them to pull together, to bond more, to express themselves. They are world-class players. They don’t really need reminding of that but everyone needs a pick-me-up now and then. It was a really rousing speech from Harry.”
England’s next challenge is against Slovenia in their final group match, where they will need to elevate their game as they prepare for the Round of 16.
