The Nigeria Premier Football League has imposed a fine of N3 million on Bayelsa United due to a security breach and inadequate crowd control during their matchday 37 clash against Shooting Stars on Sunday.
The incident occurred at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, where fans of Bayelsa United invaded the pitch in the second half, causing a temporary suspension of the game.
Shooting Stars’ goalkeeper, Okiemute Odah, was also attacked by a supporter of the home team. Bayelsa United has been directed to compensate Odah with N250,000 and to identify and prosecute the assailant within 48 hours of receiving the sanctions notice.
The NPFL warned that failure to identify, prosecute, and provide evidence of prosecuting the attacker could lead to further penalties.
The individual involved in the assault is also banned from all NPFL match venues for a year, pending identification and prosecution.
Bayelsa United has a 48-hour window from the notice date to appeal the sanctions.
