The operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Nasarawa State successfully thwarted an attempted assault on their state command in Lafia by gunmen suspected to be bandits.
In the early hours of Monday, an unspecified number of gunmen reportedly attacked the NSCDC headquarters in Lafia, firing sporadically to create public panic.
NSCDC’s State Public Relations Officer, Jerry Victor, confirmed the incident, stating that the attackers, suspected to be bandits, attempted to breach the command’s fence with iron rods while positioning themselves strategically around the building.
“The operatives of the NSCDC swiftly responded by opening fire on the hoodlums whose mission was to release some high-profile suspected criminals including informants of kidnappers in the custody of the command,” Victor stated.
Despite the intense gunfire exchange, no casualties were reported, and calm was subsequently restored.
Victor further revealed that five notorious suspects are currently detained by the command, including two informants involved in the kidnapping of the 82-year-old father of a former state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Daniel Umaru Lagi, who was killed by his abductors after a ransom was paid.
It is notable that Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, has seen a surge in kidnapping cases, prompting local authorities to impose a curfew and restrict the movement of motorcycles and tricycles between 8 PM and 6 AM.
