Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has called a meeting with the Chief Judges of the Federal High Court and Kano State High Court to address the recent legal chaos concerning the Kano Emirate.
According to The PUNCH, this action comes after the courts issued conflicting interim injunctions, exacerbating uncertainty and tension within the state.
The CJN’s intervention aims to resolve the intensified legal and political disputes over the Kano Emirate, which have been fueled by these contradictory court orders.
Central to the conflict are issues regarding the status and authority within the Kano Emirate, leading to divergent judicial decisions that have further complicated the situation.
In his summons on Wednesday, Justice Ariwoola underscored the importance of “judicial coordination and the necessity for the judiciary to present a unified front, particularly in cases of substantial public interest.”
“The upcoming meeting with the chief judges aims to clarify jurisdictional boundaries and prevent future occurrences of conflicting judicial orders.
“The situation in Kano has garnered national attention, with many stakeholders calling for a swift resolution following the state government’s decision to sack Emir Ado Bayero and reinstate Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II.”
Reports earlier revealed a heavy presence of security personnel, including policemen, soldiers, and officials of the Department of State Services, on Saturday at the Gidan Sarki Nasarawa, the residence of the dethroned Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero.
It was gathered that soldiers were stationed at the residence of the current Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, as well as at the Kano State Government House and other strategic locations within the city.
These measures were part of efforts to enhance security amid the ongoing power struggle in the emirate.
The security measures follow a new law repealing the four emirates previously created by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje. Subsequently, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano installed Sanusi as the 16th Emir of the state.
