Arsenal goalkeeper, Arthur Okonkwo, is facing a decision about his international future, torn between representing either Nigeria or England.
Born in London to Nigerian parents, the 22-year-old has the option to play for either country.
Despite having played for England at youth level, Okonkwo remains eligible for Nigeria due to his ancestry.
Rumors suggest that Okonkwo might receive a call-up to the Super Eagles for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
While he hasn’t made a final decision yet, he expressed openness to representing Nigeria, acknowledging the allure of playing for the three-time African champions.
“I’m still really ambitious to play at the international level. I can still play for England or Nigeria, and I’ve not made a choice yet,” Okonkwo.
Okonkwo’s stellar performance in the 2023/24 season earned him the title of the best goalkeeper in the English Football League.
His 14 clean sheets in 36 appearances played a crucial role in Wrexham’s successful promotion campaign.
Despite his achievements, Okonkwo is reportedly set to depart Arsenal as a free agent this summer. The Gunners are unwilling to keep him as a second-choice goalkeeper and will allow him to leave when his contract expires.
However, Okonkwo is not short of suitors. Wrexham is eager to retain the talented goalkeeper for the upcoming season, and several League One clubs have shown interest in signing him when the transfer window opens.
