Three former Chibok schoolgirls, who escaped Boko Haram captivity in 2014, are among the 189 students who recently obtained their bachelor’s degrees from the American University of Nigeria, in Adamawa State
These young girls are part of a group of around 30 internally displaced girls who started their education at AUN from the foundational level.
This marks the second group of such students to graduate from the university in the past three years.
During the 15th commencement ceremony held on Saturday in Yola, Adamawa State, the President of the American University of Nigeria, Dwayne Frazier, addressed the graduates.
He urged them to uphold the values of the institution, stating, “AUN is a developing university that equips students to tackle new challenges.
“I have no doubt that you will excel because you have all shown resilience, determination, and commitment. These qualities will propagate you for the best even as you contribute to the development of the country.”
In his address at the 15th commencement ceremony, guest speaker Professor Mike Ozekhome, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, emphasized the role of universities in making a global impact.
He highlighted that AUN has demonstrated its ability to contribute positively to the world.
“With the entrepreneurship lectures and training you have received here at AUN, you can create jobs for yourselves.”
During the 2023/2024 session, eight students were awarded PhDs, ten received MSc degrees, and 189 earned BSc degrees.
Also, Ozekhome was honored with a Doctor of Letters degree for his significant contributions to promoting peace, human rights, the rule of law, development, democracy, and good governance in Nigeria.
