A Nigerian pastor has taken a bold step in response to economic hardship by halting the collection of offerings in his church, and he is calling on other churches to follow suit.
In a widely circulated video, the yet-to-be-identified pastor while addressing the congregation in both English and Yoruba, announced the suspension of offerings until the economic situation, particularly the high cost of fuel, improves.
The pastor explained that the steep transportation costs already place a heavy burden on church members, making it difficult for them to contribute financially.
He urged other religious leaders to adopt this approach, highlighting the severe economic struggles faced by citizens across Nigeria.
He said, “We are not to collect offerings today. For now, because of the situation of this country, we are pending offering. All pastors should note it, pending the situation of this country, they shouldn’t collect offerings.
“Imagine someone coming to church, boarding a cab of N1,500 and still dropping offering, they might end up trekking home. Am I making sense? If you don’t drop money, it doesn’t mean a pastor won’t eat. Come and serve your God and go; until petrol comes down; It’s not easy.”
He concluded by urging the nation to adopt the same practice, stating, “To all pastors, stop collecting offerings for now.”
