The Academic Staff Union of Universities has threatened a nationwide strike over the Federal Government’s failure to appoint Governing Councils for Federal Universities.
According to The PUNCH, the union also criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its nonchalant attitude toward academic matters in Nigerian Federal Universities.
During a press briefing at the University of Abuja, ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke expressed the union’s dissatisfaction with the 35% salary increase for professors and the 25% increase for other academics, seeing it as a temporary wage award that the government could withdraw at any time.
Osodeke emphasized that the union has given the Tinubu-led government sufficient time to act and is also concerned about the Federal Government’s failure to appoint members of Governing Councils for Federal-owned universities, deeming the dissolution of the governing councils illegal and contradictory to the principles governing existing universities.
