Chippa United co-head coach, Thabo September, has indicated that Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is likely to depart the club at the end of the season.
Nwabali’s career has seen a remarkable ascent in recent months. Just six months ago, he was one of many Nigerian goalkeepers in the South African Premier League.
However, his fortunes changed at the start of the year when coach Jose Peseiro called him up to the Super Eagles squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, following Francis Uzoho’s inconsistent form.
The 27-year-old goalkeeper excelled during the tournament, keeping four clean sheets and making crucial saves, including two penalties in the semifinal shootout against South Africa, helping Nigeria secure the silver medal.
Nwabali’s composed performances have showcased his prowess as a top-tier goalkeeper.
His remarkable AFCON displays have attracted interest from clubs such as QPR, Al Ettifaq, and Kaizer Chiefs, although no concrete negotiations have taken place.
Despite Nwabali’s contract expiring at the end of the season, coach September remains uncertain about the goalkeeper’s future with the club.
“It’s not the right word to use, but of course I think there’s a high possibility of losing him. I don’t think it’s a fear [to lose him], that’s what the club is about,” September told SABC Sport.
Nwabali’s future destination remains uncertain, but a move to Al Ettifaq cannot be ruled out. With his career approaching its later stages, such a move could provide him with a lucrative salary package.
