An Islamic cleric, Ahmed Ojo, has allegedly set fire to his wife’s house in the Egbe Odo area of Isua Ijesa in Ekiti State.
The wife, Bosede Afolabi, revealed that the incident happened on April 27 after she declined her husband’s request to observe a late-night prayer due to fatigue.
According to The PUNCH, Afolabi said her husband became enraged and started causing a disturbance, prompting her to seek help from neighbors.
She narrated further, “At about midnight, a girl from our neighbourhood came to knock on the house to inform us that my house was on fire and that it seemed my husband had set the house on fire.
“I and some neighbours rushed to the scene only to see that the whole building had been engulfed in fire. Before we could get help in putting the fire out, the building had been razed.
“He was later caught and handed over to the police.”
Despite efforts to calm him down, Ojo’s behavior turned violent, forcing her to seek refuge at a neighbor’s house.
Later that night, a neighbor alerted her that her house was on fire, and upon arriving at the scene, she found the building completely engulfed in flames.
The suspect, Ahmed Ojo, was later apprehended and handed over to the police. Afolabi attributed her husband’s actions to the influence of alcohol, stating that he often returns home drunk.
She appealed to Nigerians for assistance, citing the significant loss she has suffered.
The Ekiti State Police Command confirmed the incident, with the Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, stating that the suspect is currently under investigation at the state’s CID.
The incident has left the community in shock, highlighting the need for addressing domestic violence and substance abuse.
