Borussia Dortmund secured their spot in the Champions League final with a 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain, making it 2-0 on aggregate at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday.
The goal by Dortmund came shortly after PSG’s Warren Zaire-Emery missed a golden opportunity, volleying against the post from close range early in the second half.
Dortmund, entering the match with a narrow one-goal lead from the first leg, stuck to their game plan, maintaining a solid defensive shape and looking for opportunities on the counterattack.
Despite PSG’s dominance in possession during the first half, they struggled to break down Dortmund’s defense.
In fact, Dortmund came closest to scoring when Julian Ryerson shot into the side netting after a lay-off from Niclas Fullkrug.
PSG ramped up their efforts after the break but missed two clear chances in quick succession. Mats Hummels then sealed the win for Dortmund with a headed goal from a corner, leaving PSG needing two goals to force extra time.
Despite several attempts, PSG failed to score, hitting the woodwork multiple times.
Dortmund’s resolute defense and efficient counterattacks proved too much for PSG, who will now face Real Madrid in the final if Real Madrid can overcome Bayern Munich in their semi-final second leg.
PSG have yet to claim a European championship, having lost in the 2020 final. Dortmund’s strong defensive performance in the recent match proved pivotal in thwarting the aspirations of the French champions.
The final will take place at Wembley on Saturday, June 1, at 20:00 BST. It could potentially feature an all-German showdown, reminiscent of the 2013 final when Bayern Munich triumphed over Dortmund with a 2-1 victory in London.
