The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has officially announced a reduction in electricity tariffs for customers of eleven Electricity Distribution Companies.
The NERC’s Commissioner of Legal, Licensing, and Compliance, Dafe Akpeneye, revealed this on Monday.
This announcement follows Ikeja Electric’s recent declaration of a reduction in electricity tariffs for band A customers to 206.80 per kilowatt-hour from N225 per kWh.
Ikeja Electric stated that the implementation of the new tariff began on Monday, May 6, 2024, resulting in an N18.2 reduction in tariffs.
In response to this development, Akpeneye confirmed that the Commission had approved the reduction as announced by Ikeja Disco, clarifying that the reduction applies to all Discos across the country.
“The order came from the Commission. It will be published on the NERC website later in the day”, he said.
At the time of the report, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Kaduna Electric, and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company have also announced a reduction in the new tariff for band A customers.
Earlier in April, NERC had approved an electricity tariff of N225 per kWh for customers in band A, who typically receive 20-24 hours of power supply in Nigeria.
However, following this decision, the Trade Union Congress and Nigeria Labour Congress issued a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding a reversal of the tariff hike.
