The Federal Government has confirmed that the new minimum wage will be implemented starting May 1, 2024, despite the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage not yet concluding its discussions.
This assurance was given by the Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, during the May Day celebration at the Eagle Square in Abuja.
Addressing Nigerian workers, Onyejeocha emphasized that while the new national minimum wage had not been finalized before May 1, extensive consultations were underway to ensure its prompt release.
The announcement comes amidst calls for a living wage, with the Nigeria Labour Congress chairman, Joe Ajaero, suggesting a figure of N615,000 for workers.
Government has earlier approved an increase of between 25% and 35% in salaries of civil servants on the existing six Consolidated Salary Structures.
The Salary Structures are the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure, Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure, Consolidated Police Salary Structure, Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure, Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure and Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure.
A statement released by Emmanuel Njoku, the Head of Press at the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, Emmanuel Njoku, announced that the salary increases will be implemented from January 1, 2024.
The Minister expressed regret that the new national minimum wage was not finalized before 2024 Workers’ Day, but assured that extensive consultations are underway to expedite the process and ensure the document is prepared as soon as possible.
