Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Ayodeji Balogun, better known as Wizkid, has sparked controversy on social media with a sharp retort aimed at music mogul, Don Jazzy, in response to a tweet by Mavin Records signee, Ladipoe.
It all started when Ladipoe hinted at a decline in the careers of Nigerian rappers compared to the success of Afrobeat artists.
“Nigerian rappers that survived ‘hip hop is dead’ watching Afrobeat artists go through their own,” he wrote.
This caught the attention of a Twitter user who directed Wizkid’s attention to it.
Wizkid responded by dismissing any possibility of engaging with artists signed to ‘an influencer,’ which was seen as a subtle jab at Don Jazzy, under whose label Ladipoe operates. His tweet read, “lol never chatting to anyone signed to an influencer. Next.”
This comment has since sparked a flurry of reactions and speculations within the music industry and among fans.
Some praised Wizkid for being human and not always minding his business, while others criticized him for what they perceived as disrespect towards Don Jazzy.
Regardless, Wizkid’s response has ignited a social media storm, demonstrating the power of a few words to stir up emotions and conversations.
