AC Milan head coach, Stefano Pioli, has clarified the decision to start Samuel Chukwueze on the bench in the club’s Serie A clash with Juventus.
Pioli gave this explanation when speaking with Milan News.
Despite Chukwueze’s recent impressive performances, he was left out of the starting lineup against Maximiliano Allegri’s side, coming on as a substitute for Christian Pulisic in the 83rd minute.
Pioli explained that he has occasionally had to prioritize a midfielder over the winger, leading to Chukwueze being utilized as a substitute.
While Pioli has faced criticism for this choice, he maintained that it was a tactical decision based on the team’s needs.
”I liked Pulisic (vs Juventus) instead. Chukwueze is also fine, but at the moment I won’t give up an extra midfielder to play with 4 attacking players and therefore Chukwuze is the one sacrificed the most at the moment,” Pioli said
The 24-year-old has scored once in 22 league appearances for AC Milan this season.
