The Enugu State Police Command on Friday dismissed stories of a woman allegedly abandoning her children due to hardship in Ogui Police Station, Enugu.
The Command’s Spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, clarified a statement.
It would be recalled that news went viral on the 7th of March, 2024 that a mother of three children allegedly committed suicide in Enugu State over what some sources attributed to the unbearable economic hardship and rising cost of living in the country. The incident was said to have occured in March 2.
The Police Command however said on Friday these reports are untrue and misleading.
The statement reads in part, “However, these reports are untrue and misleading. Hence, the command clarifies and presents an accurate account of the incident.
“On March 2, at about 8:30 a.m., the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) of Central Police Station (CPS) and Ogui Police Division received distress calls alleging that a woman abandoned her three children in front of God Is Good Terminal along Ogui Road by Osisatech Roundabout, Enugu.
“The callers further alleged that the woman stripped herself naked due to a mental disorder before running off to an unknown destination.”
“The DPOs and their teams immediately moved to the scene, where they found and took the children to Ogui Police Station and commenced investigations to locate their mother,” he said.
The police spokesman said that during the investigations, Mrs Nkechinyere Mbah, wife of the Governor, visited the Police station, offering scholarships and welfare support for all three children (names withheld), aged six, three and two.
He said that afterwards, they were handed over to the Ministry of Gender Affairs and Social Development through Mrs. Ngozi Enih, the Commissioner overseeing the ministry.
