A dramatic incident occurred when , a 30-year-old three-time felon, Deobra Redden, attacked Judge Mary Kay Holthus during a sentencing hearing in Las Vegas
This altercation ensued after the judge denied Redden probation for his conviction of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm in Clark County District Court.
During the hearing, Redden’s attorney requested probation for his client, but Judge Holthus, considering Redden’s history, opted for a different approach.
“I think it’s time he got a taste of something else because I just can’t with that history,” she remarked.
Suddenly, Redden rushed towards the bench, leaping over it with outstretched arms, and tackled the judge to the ground, causing the American flag and Nevada state flag to fall in the commotion.
Amidst the chaos, witnesses grappled with Redden as he directed profanities at Judge Holthus.
Despite court officers attempting to intervene and subdue him, Redden managed to break free and made further attempts to reach the judge while she remained on the ground.
A struggle ensued involving punches exchanged between Redden and others in the courtroom, as captured in the footage.
“What the hell’s wrong with you man?” someone can be heard yelling in the background.
“Where’s Mary Kay – is she okay?” a man asks when Redden is finally put in handcuffs.
“Thank God the judge is okay,” Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said in a statement. “Thank God for the heroic efforts of those who came to her aid, especially her marshal and her law clerk.
“Without them, the situation would have been much worse as this defendant exhibited extremely violent behavior and I’m confident there will be consequences,” Wolfson said.
