Super Eagles Coach, Jose Peseiro, has expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to clinch a fourth Africa Cup of Nations trophy.
The last time the Super Eagles won AFCON was in 2013 in South Africa, and this year’s tournament will be held in Ivory Coast, commencing on January 14th.
“We will fight to win the Africa Cup even though it won’t be easy,” Peseiro told NFF TV on Monday.
In the initial round, the Super Eagles are up against a formidable group comprising Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau. Ivory Coast holds the advantage of playing at home, while Equatorial Guinea notably reached the quarterfinals in the previous tournament.
“Our group is not easy because we are up against the Ivory Coast, who have a good squad and are playing at home,” the coach acknowledged.
Still, Peseiro is optimistic about Nigeria’s chances. “We have to be at our best in our training and our matches,” he said.
The Portuguese manager monitored over 70 players before selecting the final 25-man squad. “It was not easy to choose,” Peseiro admitted.
This week, the Nigerian team convenes in Abu Dhabi for a training camp ahead of the tournament.
Their first match is scheduled for January 14 against Equatorial Guinea.
Despite the obstacles, Peseiro remains confident in Nigeria’s talent, aiming for their fourth continental crown in Ivory Coast.
