The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has removed an Instagram post that quoted former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison-Madueke, regarding money laundering charges against her.
The post, previously visible and claiming to feature the former minister’s remarks in a UK interview, has since been taken down from the EFCC’s official Instagram handle.
According to The PUNCH, when questioned about this, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale refuted the report, emphasizing that the agency did not originate nor endorse the unsigned post.
“The report is not from the EFCC. Anything that is not signed by me is not from us (the EFCC),” Oyewale said
Allison-Madueke, who served during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s tenure, reportedly left the country amidst EFCC prosecution for alleged money laundering, as per The PUNCH.
In October 2023, Sunday PUNCH exclusively disclosed that the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, forwarded a warrant of arrest and an extradition request to the UK’s Crown Prosecution Services.
This action came following orders from President Bola Tinubu, prompted by the EFCC’s prior official request to the AGF’s office in October.
Sources from the Federal Government revealed that the extradition request referred to Nigeria’s Extradition Act, CAP E25, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, and ‘The Scheme,’ a Commonwealth extradition treaty regulating UK-Nigeria extradition under Section 2 (2) of the Act.
“The EFCC established a prima facie case against Allison-Madueke in a letter to the office of the AGF, after which a magistrate was ordered to issue a warrant of arrest. The Certified True Copy of the warrant of arrest was then attached to the extradition request written to the UK government by the AGF on the orders of the President,” a source had noted.
