Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive audit of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.
According to Channels, he stated this on Thursday during his speech at The Bank Directors Summit at Transcorp Hilton in Abuja.
He attributed this stance to the reason behind his departure from the apex bank.
Stressing the separation of the President from the Minister of Petroleum, a position he firmly advocated, Sanusi highlighted the importance of maintaining entities like the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria and the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation until banks settle their obligations.
Furthermore, he urged the banking sector to rebuild trust among the public and emphasized that the autonomy of the CBN from political influence need not be altered through amendments to the CBN Act.
Earlier in August, President Bola Tinubu divided the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, appointing Ekperipe Ekpo as Minister of State, Gas Resources, and Heineken Lokpobiri as Minister of State, Petroleum Resources.
However, in a continuity of past practices, Tinubu retained the substantive Minister of Petroleum Resources portfolio for himself, similar to his predecessor, ex-President Muhammadu Buhari.
