Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham has acknowledged former England International Wayne Rooney as his most significant influence.
This comes after he was awarded the prestigious Golden Boy accolade.
The 20-year-old football sensation, a key figure for both his club and the national team, was honored with the esteemed prize on Monday in Turin, Italy, placing him among revered names such as Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, and Rooney himself.
Bellingham, visibly touched by the recognition, singled out Rooney for his immense impact on his growth and development in the footballing world.
“For me, I would probably say that Rooney was my biggest influence growing up,” he declared. “Being from England, the way he played, the way he fought… there are so many other players I’ve taken bits from, but he was a huge inspiration.”
The award marks the pinnacle of an exceptional year for Bellingham. He secured the title of Bundesliga Player of the Season in the previous term before his transfer to Real Madrid.
Since joining the club, he has made an impressive start, netting 15 goals in 17 games across various competitions.
“I’m just very lucky,” he reflected. “I’ve played with some amazing players and stolen loads of little techniques off them. I can’t be more grateful to everyone who’s helped me get here.”
Bellingham’s ascent has been meteoric. From shining for England in the 2022 World Cup to winning the Kopa Trophy for the best U21 player worldwide, he is now spearheading Real Madrid’s campaigns at the summit of both La Liga and the Champions League group.
