The Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Environment, Hon. Terseer Ugbor, has stated that the committee aims to secure a $1 billion funding commitment for Nigeria at the upcoming 28th Conference of Parties in Dubai, UAE
According to Daily Trust, he stated this during the One-day National Stakeholders Pre-COP28 Workshop, organized by Oxfam Nigeria in conjunction with the National Council on Climate Change.
“Nigeria’s target at the COP28 would be to secure sustainable funding mechanisms to support climate adaptation initiatives and ensure their successful implementation, while also enhancing the capacity and technical skills of stakeholders involved in climate adaptation to effectively address climate challenges,” he said.
The Climate Justice Lead for Nigeria at Oxfam, Kenneth Akpan, stressed the urgency for climate action, affirming Oxfam’s ongoing commitment to supporting Nigeria in this regard.
He emphasized the necessity for Nigeria to unite and present a unified stance at COP28 to enhance its chances of securing crucial climate funding.
Also, the Director General of the National Council on Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Salisu, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the significance of the workshop in aligning Nigeria’s efforts to present a unified front at the conference.
Dr. Salisu emphasized the country’s need to strive collectively to secure funding from its partners.
