Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum ferried over 20 kilometres on the Nigerian side of Lake Chad in Baga on Monday to unlock opportunities for reviving transborder trade between the state and the Chad Republic.
Boko Haram and ISWAP have maintained control over the Chad Basin region, leading to a drastic decline in transborder trade between the two entities over the past 13 years.
Governor Zulum visited Baga to evaluate sections of Lake Chad, part of his government’s strategy to bolster agricultural activities along the basin’s shores.
During his evaluation, the governor highlighted that the resurgence of agricultural activities along the shores of Lake Chad would provide the returning communities with sustainable sources of livelihood.
“We are here to see how we can support large-scale farming. This town was ravaged by the insurgents and people were resettled back about the last two or three years.
“Our first objective is to see how we can support the army and the navy to clear the waterways so that movement by boat from Baga to Chad can commence which will enhance transborder trade and agriculture,” he said.
