The Lagos State Government has removed and arrested street traders operating at the Oshodi-Agege Motor Road, Ikeja GRA, Old Secretariat, among others.
According to The PUNCH, this was disclosed through a statement by the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources on Wednesday.
The statement explained that the operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps and the Kick Against Indiscipline, who carried out the operation, acted on the directives of the Commissioner of the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab.
“The arrested environmental defaulters were taken to the LAGESC headquarters and handed over to the appropriate section for further action,” the statement said.
Also, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Environmental Services,Gaji Omobolaji, in a statement cautioned that individuals caught in violation would be prosecuted according to the state’s environmental laws in Mobile Courts.
Additionally, their merchandise displayed or sold along major roads would be confiscated.
Omobolaji emphasized that in the transition of Lagos from a megacity to a smart city, there is no room for street vendors. These vendors not only mar the city’s visual appeal but also subject themselves to risks and pose a threat to the safety of people and property.
