Armed robbers on Wednesday killed a security guard, identified simply as Peter, during an attack on Mambillah Hotel, in the Owutu area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that when the robbers stormed the hotel around 2.40am, workers and customers were asleep.
It was learnt that many woke up when the robbers broke into rooms to rob them of their valuables at gunpoint.
Among the victims were three officials of the Joint Admission and Matriculations Board, who were said to be lodgers in the hotel.
Our correspondent learnt that the robbers had successfully robbed the victims of their valuables, including laptops, mobile phones and jewellery, when the security guard attempted to prevent them from escaping.
In the process, the assailants reportedly shot the 40-year-old and escaped, using a waiting vehicle parked outside the premises.
An eyewitness, while lamenting the incident in a short video clip reposted on an Instagram platform, Instablog9ja, was heard saying the robbers raided everywhere in the hotel.
“Thank God for my life; see the door, see everywhere; they bust all the doors, they bust everywhere; they bust everybody,” he stated while filming the hotel.
Policemen, alongside a crowd of onlookers, lodgers and staff members of the hotel were seen in the video.
Also, a picture of a victim whose injured head had been covered with a plaster, was also attached to the post.
It was learnt that the police and some of the hotel workers rushed the injured security guard to a nearby hospital.
Peter was, however, said to have succumbed to his injuries.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the attack, adding that the police had commenced investigation into it.
He said, “Armed men attacked the hotel and robbed three occupants who are JAMB officials. The armed robbers were trying to escape when the security man made an attempt to prevent them from escaping, but the armed robbers shot him and succeeded in escaping.
“The police took the security man to a hospital where he was confirmed dead. The incident happened around 2.40am.”
The spokesperson for JAMB, Fabian Benjamin, said, “We are aware of the incident; none of our officials was killed, but they were robbed because they were in the hotel.”
