The Department of Development Control in the Federal Capital Territory Administration reported the demolition of 11,705 shanties across the territory from January to October 2023.
They also disclosed generating N1.7 billion from building plan approvals, creating 13,873 direct and indirect jobs during the same period.
The department’s director, Mukhtar Galadima, revealed these details in Abuja, highlighting areas like Kabusa, Kasuwan Dare, Galadimawa Junction, Mabushi Scavenger Colony, and Gudu District as affected by the shanty demolitions.
The department also addressed obstructing structures on waterways in Lugbe, Jahi, and Lokogoma, contributing to flood prevention in the city. Galadima noted receiving 1,764 building plan applications, granting 1,422, and achieving N2.5 billion in revenue from January to October, representing 68.5% of the targeted N3.7 billion.
“We equally inaugurated a Committee on the Prevention of Building Collapse in the FCT to proffer modalities and institutional framework to avert building collapse in the territory. The department also inaugurated a Post-Development Audit which commenced at Dawaki as a pilot scheme,” he added.
