The Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has issued an appeal to young individuals in the South-East to consider joining the Nigeria Police Force.
Ohanaeze’s call comes in response to concerns raised by the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Solomon Arase, regarding the significantly low turnout of recruits from the South-East region, particularly in states like Anambra, Ebonyi, Abia, and Imo.
The Police Service Commission reported that as of last Wednesday, Anambra State had the fewest applicants at just 541, whereas Kaduna State led the pack with a substantial 20,259 applicants. Other states following closely behind included Adamawa, Borno, Bauchi, Katsina, and Kano with their respective application numbers.
Similar to Anambra, the South-Eastern states did not yield significantly higher numbers, with Ebonyi having 737 applicants, Abia with 966, Imo with 999, and Enugu with 1,036.
In response to the limited enthusiasm shown by individuals from the Igbo community in this recruitment drive, the spokesperson for Ohanaeze, Dr. Alex Ogbonnia, encouraged the region’s youth to actively consider applying for positions within the police force.
Ogbonnia said, “Our people are advised to key into the police recruitment because at this time around you can’t begin to talk about marginalisation when they are calling for it and our people are not showing interest. Regardless of the rank being recruited, our boys roaming around should go and join the police.”
