The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has announced its intent to investigate the alleged killing of a Nigerian medical student, identified as Ikem, in the Philippines.
The move comes in response to a disturbing tweet by a user named @michaelojuola, which detailed a harrowing account of the student’s alleged murder.
In the tweet, @michaelojuola described the victim as having been tied up, with his mouth covered, and subjected to fatal beatings.
The social media user called upon NiDCOM and other relevant authorities, including the Nigerian Senate, to intervene and seek justice for the deceased student.
NiDCOM’s Spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, confirmed the Commission’s commitment to launching an official inquiry into this tragic incident.
Balogun stated, “The attention of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has been drawn to a viral social media news item on the death of a Nigerian student, identified as Ikem, who was allegedly murdered by a group of Chinese in the Republic of the Philippines.”
While the matter has not yet been formally reported to the Nigerian embassy in the Philippines, NiDCOM is taking the matter seriously and is eager to gather more information to facilitate a thorough investigation.
Balogun further urged the “eyewitness” who shared the incident on social media to provide additional details to the Commission via email at [email protected].
“The Commission will set the machinery in motion to investigate the matter and unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the commission stated.
