Tragedy struck in Akwa, the capital of Anambra State, as a young girl, yet to be identified, was swept away by flood during a heavy downpour.
According to The PUNCH, the 13-year-old girl’s heroic attempt to rescue a wheelbarrow, reportedly belonging to her guardian, ended in a heartbreaking accident.
According to an eyewitness account reported by Daily Post, the girl had been assisting her guardian in selling food.
Alongside another girl, they ventured out in the midst of the rain. Tragically, as she tried to retrieve the wheelbarrow, she lost her footing and was carried away by the force of the floodwaters.
The eyewitness described the incident, saying, “They were two girls, but one of them, who was the eldest, missed her step and fell into the drainage, and was immediately swept away.”
Despite the swift response of people in the area who rallied to rescue the girl from a drainage system down the road, it was already too late. She had tragically lost her life.
The woman she had been assisting in her food-selling business was left in utter distress amidst the pouring rain.
The witness stated, “The woman she was helping was wailing helplessly under the rain, and everybody pitied her. From what we gathered, she was not the mother of the girls; they were girls who were helping her in her shop.”
The guardian was left grappling with the anguish of how to convey this tragic story to the girl’s parents.
