A High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos State has sentenced the suspended Assistant Superintendent of Police, Drambi Vandi, to death by hanging for the murder of Lagos-based lawyer Mrs. Omobolanle Raheem.
Punch Metro reported that 41-year-old Bolanle, a property lawyer with over 10 years of call-to-bar experience, was killed on Christmas Day during a stop-and-search duty in the Ajah area of Lagos.
Vandi who was attached to the Ajiwe Police Station in Ajah, Lagos, reportedly shot the pregnant lawyer while she was returning from an outing with her husband, sister and other family members.
Passing judgment on Monday, Lagos State’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo, SAN, found the suspect guilty of Raheem’s murder.
“The court finds the defendant guilty on one count of murder. You will be hanged by the neck till you are dead.” the judge held.
Speaking after the court verdict, the Raheem family lawyer Olakitan Agbaje, told newsmen that the family is satisfied with the judgement and has come to terms with the fact that Raheem is gone forever.
“The incident of 25 December 2022 will forever remain a tragedy to the Raheem family because it changed many people’s lives, the life of her husband, daughter and many who loved her.
“However justice has been served, in the space of 10 months, Justice Harrison delivered her judgement and the accused (Vandi) has been sentenced to death by hanging and we believe that this is a step to reduce the pain of family members,” Agbaje said, according to BBC Pidgin.
