The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, Dauda Biu, has charged the special marshals in the country to show the highest level of discipline and professionalism in eradicating road accidents in accordance with best global practices.
Biu gave the charge at the sideline of a one-day sectoral special marshals workshop held on Wednesday in Osogbo, the Osun State capital with the theme, ‘Volunteerism in Road Safety Management: Limits and Possibilities’.
Represented by Corps Commander, Shoba Akande, Biu stated that the workshop, in collaboration with stakeholders, would help in accomplishing FRSC 2023 corporate strategic goals.
He said, ”These goals will help in enhancing road safety partnerships for innovative interventions and also accomplishing a five per cent reduction in traffic accidents and injuries.
”It will also improve capacity for data collection, analysis and enhance safety policy formulation,” Biu said.
He added, “The need to always review activities and also analyse the impact of the activities in reduction of road traffic accidents in Nigeria is paramount.”
Biu, then said the workshop would broaden the psyche of all participants and also accomplish the expected harvest by road users in Nigeria.
The Zonal Commanding Officer in charge of Osun, Oyo and Ondo, Meshach Jatau, had earlier enjoined special marshals to intensify efforts and prepare to partner with regular marshals to mitigate accidents to their barest minimum.
Jatau hailed the corps marshal for his unwavering efforts geared towards ensuring safety on highways across the country.
He hoped that the workshop would empower participants with the requisite knowledge in safety administration.
The Zonal Commanding Officer said that safety is a shared responsibility among stakeholders, which must be brought to practice rather than left in the hands of the regular marshals alone.
Speaking, the National Co-ordinator for Special Marshals, John Ugbebor, lauded the corps for giving them the necessary support to ensure the event’s success.
Ugbebor, represented by Tunji Ajiboye, disclosed that the marshals would not give up in ensuring professionalism in the discharge of their volunteering services.
He said the workshop is a testament to its commitment towards professionalism.
Ajiboye noted that the knowledge and skills acquired from the workshop will impact the daily activities of special marshals positively.
Also, the Osun Sector Commander, Henry Benamaisia, vowed that the 700-plus special marshals in the state will work towards achieving its targeted mandate.
Benamaisia urged all transport stakeholders and other security sister agencies to support in making highways free of accidents.
