The Chairman of the Lagos State Assembly’s ad hoc committee responsible for probing the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Adebola Akin-Bright’s small intestine, Noheem Adams, has informed his fellow committee members that Dr. Abayomi Bayewu, the physician who performed surgeries on the young boy, was not a qualified surgeon.
Adebola Akin-Bright tragically passed away on Tuesday shortly after the House called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to provide further assistance in seeking medical treatment abroad.
During the plenary session on Thursday, Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, issued a directive for the Clerk, Olalekan Onafeko, to draft a letter to the state police command requesting the arrest of Dr. Abayomi Bayewu in connection with the case.
In a statement released on Friday and signed by Eromosele Ebhomele, the Media Assistant to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adams revealed that Dr. Bayewu admitted to the committee that he had not conducted any medical examination on the boy before performing the initial surgery himself.
“As a doctor, Bayewu should have taken the excised part of the boy’s body to a pathological department for a test, but Dr Baiyewu told the committee that the body parts were mistakenly discarded and the doctor had planned to do a third surgery before the boy was taken to LASUTH.”
Following Noheem’s testimony, the Lagos State House of Assembly expressed its condolences to the grieving family, and Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda proposed the closure of the hospital.
