In their match of the Africa Women’s Youth Handball Championship, held in Monastir, Tunisia, the National Under-18 women’s handball team emerged victorious with a score of 28-18 against their Algerian counterparts.
According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria, the Nigerian team exhibited commendable performance in their inaugural match, hence instilling a sense of national pride.
The outcome of the initial period was unfavourable for the Nigerian female team in their match against the Algerian opponents, resulting in a thrilling tie with a score of 10-10.
The result of the first half was not good for the Nigerian girls against the Algerians as they played out a pulsating 10-10.
Nigeria emerged victorious in the second half of the match against their North African counterpart, achieving a score of 18-8 and ultimately securing a final result of 28-10.
The Nigerian team’s coach, Shittu Agboola, described the game as “a good beginning.”
“I noticed that the girls were having unnecessary turnovers, so I made some tactical changes that saw the team use the wings more in the second half.
“The girls all played to instructions which gave us a good result. We are here to win all our games; we came for a serious business,” he said.
The game’s Most Valuable Player award went to Nigeria’s Taiwo Babatunde.
Group A reportedly consists of Nigeria, Tunisia, Algeria, and Guinea.
On Sunday at 4 PM, Nigeria will take on Guinea in their next game.
The 19th Africa Women’s Youth Handball Championship, which began this past Saturday, is scheduled to wrap up on September 23rd.
