Two sisters, Suliyat and Nofisat Ayanshina, were killed after a building owned by their family in Ojodu Abiodun in the Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, collapsed on them.
According to The PUNCH, the incident was said to have occurred due to a mudslide following a downpour.
It was reported that the deceased were inside the building when it caved in, trapping them in the process.
While it took some time for neighbors to rescue them from the trapped building, they were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, ‘Tomade Hospital’, where the doctor declared them dead.
According to an anonymous eyewitness residing in the neighbourhood, who requested to remain unidentified due to lack of authorization to speak on behalf of the family, it was reported that the tragedy caught everyone by surprise.
The eyewitness further asserted that community people made concerted efforts to rescue both victims from the debris.
The source said, “The sisters were inside the house when the incident happened. We all jointly made efforts to rescue them from the wreckage. We immediately took them to the hospital. It’s so sad that we lost them.”
Meanwhile, the family asked that Islamic burial traditions be followed after reporting the incident to the police.
The state’s public relations officer, Odutola Omolola, verified the occurrence and said the family had requested a quick burial.
