One person was killed on Tuesday when a Toyota saloon car rammed into a faulty truck conveying metal scraps at the 2nd Artillery axis of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
An eyewitness, who asked not to be identified, said the car driver was descending a flyover bridge around 8pm when he rammed into the trailer, which was parked near a Catholic church.
He said, “The man was driving down from the flyover. Maybe he didn’t see the trailer was parked there. The parked trailer carried scraps. The man just rammed into it.”
The Head of Operations, Federal Road Safety Corps, Rivers State Command, Chukwuma Mbaegbu, confirmed the incident.
“Yes, the crash happened in the night, but we got the information this morning (Wednesday) and our men were sent there. They confirmed that somebody died and they took him to a mortuary,” Mbaegbu stated.
In a related development, one person was killed after a trailer belonging to the Julius Berger Construction Company rammed into a petrol tanker at Chiromawa village, along Kano- Zaria Road, in the Garun Malam Local Government Area of Kano State.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, led to a fire incident that engulfed both vehicles.
The trailer driver, Aminu Dakatsalle, 40, was said to have died on the spot.
The spokesman for the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, who confirmed the incident, said the tanker, which was conveying about 60,000 litres of petrol, broke down along Zaria Road.
Abdullahi attributed the incident to loss of control, adding that the victim’s corpse was handed over to the Divisional Police Officer of Garun Malam Police Division.
