The board of the Nigeria Women Football League has released the Strategic Direction and Action Plan for the development of women’s football in the country ahead of the start of the 2023/2024 season.
NWFL Chairman Nkechi Obi said on Wednesday that the strategic plan is in step with the development in the popularity of women’s football as one of the world’s fastest-growing sports with an expanding record of corporate sponsorship, audience and match day attendance.
Obi believes the increased options for Nigerian players to play professional football across the world have prompted the construction of a career pathway for the talents originating from the country as not all of them can be fully absorbed in the foreign major leagues.
“Women Football Rising is the strategic platform developed by NWFL to exponentially grow women’s football in Nigeria through strong and sustainable football clubs. The platform will drive the empowerment of women football players in Nigeria through the gradual but sustained commercialisation of club football and delivery of strategic objectives based on sustainable and scalable execution plan,” Obi said.
According to her, the NWFL has produced a comprehensive strategy consisting of five key components to accomplish its goals. This strategy has been formed through extensive consultations with various stakeholders from diverse fields, with the aim of effectively conveying the message of engagement and inclusivity.
As per her statement, the plan will serve as a framework for directing the operations of the NWPL, encompassing its activities at both league tiers and throughout the member clubs involved in the league.
The implementation of this approach will commence with the Annual General Assembly, which is slated for October 5, preceding the commencement of the new season in November.
