Few weeks after Span won the 2023 women’s world cup, the Spanish football federation has fired its women’s national teams coach Jorge Vilda, on Tuesday.
In a statement that did not mention Hermoso, Rubiales or the scandal, the RFEF thanked 42-year-old Vilda for his “extraordinary sporting legacy.
“The coach has been key to the remarkable growth of women’s football and leaves Spain as world champions and second in the FIFA rankings,” the RFEF statement said.
The coach was among those who commended Rubiales when he refused to resign despite widespread criticism for kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the lips without her permission during last month’s championship celebrations in Sydney.
FIFA has temporarily suspended Rubiales, who also made an obscene victory gesture after the match, and he is being investigated by the Spanish government for the actions that sparked outrage and spurred numerous calls for his resignation.
