The Nigerian Feminist Forum has condemned the act by the people of Aguleri in Anambra state, who paraded a widow, Ajuese Obiora, over alleged infidelity and death of her husband.
In a statement signed by the NFF Communications Officer, Angela Nkwo, the group called on Anambra State Commissioner of Police and the Inspector General of Police to fish out all the perpetrators of what they described as inhuman debasement.
The statement titled ‘NFF Condemns Aguleri people for debasement of over 100 Nigerian women’ was made available on Monday.
It partly read, “The Nigerian Feminist Forum has condemned with regret and disappointment, what she described as the barbaric debasement of womanhood by some Aguleri persons when they paraded a widow, Mrs Ajuese Obiora naked for alleged infidelity and death of her husband.
“NFF, in a statement signed by her Communications Officer, Angela Nkwo said the action of the Obiora family and Aguleri people by terrible chauvinists and patriarchists debased over 100 million Nigerian women and humanity.
“The group called on the Anambra State Commissioner of Police and the Inspector General of Police to fish out all the perpetrators of what they described as an inhuman debasement of Ajuese and their prosecution.
“The group demanded the publication of a public apology from the widow’s in-laws, the Obiora family and the Aguleri community published in national dailies.
“Further, the feminist group called on the Igwe of Aguleri community to ostracize all the perpetrators of the inhuman abuse of Ajuese to serve as a deterrent to others against such dastardly act.”
Also, the group called on the State Governor-elect, Prof Charles Soludo and his wife, Mrs Nonye, to ensure that Ajuese received “adequate support to address her mental, psychological, financial, and complete wellbeing to prevent her from suicidal thoughts and further harm from entrenched patriarchists in Aguleri community”.
