In an effort to curb the frequent farmers and herders crisis, Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State has set up a 17-member committee to demarcate the Nelba farming-grazing area in the Suru and Bagudo Local Government Areas of the state.
This was contained in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Babale Umar-Yauri in Birnin Kebbi.
He said the committee which was mandated to commence action with effect from March 1, had its members drawn from various MDAs, traditional institutions, groups and security agencies.
Umar-Yauri listed members of the committee to include; Alhaji Ahmed Usman-Bunza as Chairman, the Acting Director of EXCO as its Secretary, while State Chairman and Secretary of Miyetti Allah would serve as members.
Others according to him, are; representatives of Police Commissioner, State Director of Security, Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and the Ministry of Animal Health.
Others are the Ministry of Agriculture, State Surveyor General, Council Chairmen of Bagudo and Suru Local Government Areas and District Heads of Illo and Aljannare.
He explained that the committee’s terms of reference were to obtain and refer to all previous reports on any move to demarcate the area for the purpose of farming/grazing by the authorities.
“The committee will also explore ways to ensure final and amicable settlement of any lingering issue of farmers/fulanis dispute over the area.
“It will also make any useful recommendation(s) that will ensure sustainable peace and development of the area.
“The committee has three weeks from the date of appointment within which to complete its assignment and submit its report to the State Government,” he said.
