Nigeria Afrobeats singer, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido has commiserated with colleague and Nigerian Grammy Award-winning artiste, Wizkid, over the death of his mother, Mrs. Jane Dolapo Balogun.
Reports revealed that that Mrs. Balogun passed away in the early hours of Friday, August 18, 2023.
In a condolence message shared via his verified X account, formerly Twitter, on Saturday, Davido assured Wizkid that he’ll of his prayers.
He said, “Praying for you my brother @wizkidayo. Sadness flies away on the wings of time.”
Punch Metro recalls that Davido had his moment of grief when he lost his son, Ifeanyi, who died three days after his third birthday in October 2022, after drowning in a swimming pool at the singer’s residence, in the Banana Island area of Lagos State.
Ifeanyi who he shared with his wife Chioma Rowland was first noticed in the pool by the cleaning staff. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
However, Davido and Wizkid had a history of an alleged beef which was watered down after Davido met and exchanged pleasantries with the ‘Ojuelegba’ crooner’s mum(now late) at an airport back in August 2022.
<blockquote class=”twitter-tweet”><p lang=”en” dir=”ltr”>Such an amazing Woman … God bless you ma …. D way I was carrying mommy’s bags today at the airport .. dem know say nah First class citizen ❤️❤️❤️ <a href=”https://t.co/Yl1xumnMDx”>https://t.co/Yl1xumnMDx</a></p>— Davido (@davido) <a href=”https://twitter.com/davido/status/1563108771085201410?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>August 26, 2022</a></blockquote> <script async src=”https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js” charset=”utf-8″></script>
Speaking on the alleged beef, Davido explained that it was fan-fueled rivalry, claiming that he and the artist were longtime friends, though relationship soured as they both matured physically.
He said, “African beef and American beef is very, very different. With me and Wiz… there was going to be a little rivalry. It actually started with the fans; it was the fans going at it. We was f**king around and he announced like, ‘Yo, I’m going on tour with Davido next year.’ The fans were so angry,” Davido stated.
Reports revealed that their strained relationship can be traced back to their startup days as rising artists in 2011.
A viral video had showed how the duo shared a very “lengthy” emotional hug at a nightclub in Lagos, while surrounded by their crew.
In 2015, Wizkid and Davido performed together on stage for the first time and a few more times afterwards. However, despite uniting on stage the duo’s relationship still remained strained.
In an interview with on air personality Ebuka on Bounce Radio, Davido said his relationship with Wizkid “has never been from his path.”
Davido disclosed further that their relationship went sour because Wizkid saw him as a competition.
“Do you feel like you became competition?” Ebuka had asked, with Davido responding, “Of course, definitely, he knows that and that could be the only reason he will be vexing at me because I have never done nothing,” adding, “I love Wizkid and I know he love me to too.”
Fans of Davido and Wizkid have taken to social media to jubilate over their reconciliation and are hoping for a music collaboration soon.
