The Chairperson of the Nigerian Women’s Football League, Aisha Falode, has provided clarification that the prize money for the 2023 Women’s World Cup will be disbursed by FIFA through the country’s organisation.
PUNCH METRO reported that the secretary-general of FIFA, Fatma Samoura, expressed that in light of the Super Falcons’ advancement to the second round of the Mundial, the international football governing organisation intends to directly provide the country’s women’s football team with the outstanding allowances they are owed.
It has been revealed by FIFA that each player partaking in the group stage of the World Cup would receive a remuneration of $30,000.
The second round of the competition will witness an increase in the match bonuses, which will amount to $60,000.
According to the prevailing conditions, it is anticipated that every member of the Nigerian squad will receive a minimum compensation of $60,000 upon successfully progressing to the round of 16 in the tournaments held in Australia and New Zealand.
During a conversation with Lagos Talks FM on Wednesday, Falode emphasised that the prize money for the World Cup will be safeguarded to ensure its direct allocation to the players, free from any external intervention.
The individual observed that the prize money earned by the Falcons in the ongoing World Cup will continue to be channelled through the NFF.
She said, “FIFA did not say it would pay the players directly. It says working through the member association – working through your federations, we will pay you this money through the federations,” the NWFL chair said.
“FIFA will pay the federations the money, and the federation pays the players with the instruction. Everybody knows it is there in black and white.”
