The Oyo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Tuesday continued its protest in the state over demands for better welfare of workers in the state.
This comes a day after a similar demonstration held in Ibadan, on Monday blocking the road that leads to the state secretariat.
The protest began at about past 8am after members of the NLC and various affiliated unions, as well as members of the TUC converged on the Agodi, chanting songs of solidarity.
The protest is currently making vehicular movement uneasy around the governor’s office.
Tuesday’s protest is coming despite the intervention of the state government on Monday.
The Governor of the State Seyi Makinde who is said to be out of town sent representatives to address the protesting workers but they were sent back by the NLC with a stance insisting that it is only the governor they want to talk to.
The NLC among other requests is asking the state government for upward review of pension allowances, payment of monies deducted from the salaries in the past, and palliatives.
However, the state government through the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade in a statement on Monday said said government deserves a pat on the back, if in spite of this tightrope government still embarks on magnitude of infrastructural projects, that even the NLC has applauded numerously.
The statement reads in part,” the government has rallied the NLC to discuss the issue of salary deductions exhaustively, before embarking on any form of protest.
“While it is the Right and Entitlement of our workers to access their wages, especially at this tough time, Government implores them to reflect on the sincerity of purpose of this administration.”he added.
