Some elders in the northern states, under the aegis of the Elders’ Forum of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, have backed the presidential ambition of the National vice president of the union, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, in the southwest.
This was made known in a statement at the weekend signed by Comrade Aminu Dongoyaro and Alhaji Abubakar Mustapha, the Secretary and chairman, respectively.
The Forum indicated their sadness and dissatisfaction with the state of affairs in NURTW since 2019, when the outgoing president, Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Batuwa, took over the mantle of leadership at the national headquarters of the union.
In the statement, Alhaji Baruwa said he has mismanaged the union while bemoaning that giving him the opportunity to go for another term will mean the end of the union.
The statement read, “We as elders from the northern states have been watching the situation of things in our dear union, and after due consideration, we felt it was time for us to speak our minds about the state of affairs in NURTW.
“We want to join our brothers and comrades from the southwest to endorse Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede to step in as the next president of our great union.
“As elders, we were enjoying a monthly allowance as pension under the immediate past administration of Alhaji Najeem Usman Yasin, but Baruwa cancelled the largesse immediately he came in, thus subjecting us to unwanted hardships”.
The elders urged members of the union from other zones like South-South and Southeast to partner with Southwest to endorse Alhaji Agbede as president to rescue the union from the bad situation and avoid untimely death.
