Johannesburg, South Africa was on Wednesday rocked by an explosion which was caused by an underground laid gas pipeline.
The incident also caused a largely significant sinkhole to nearby roads in the city.
Videos and pictures from the scene of the incident making rounds on social media showed vehicles and other automobiles trapped in the affected parts of the road
According to an alert sent by the Johannesburg Joint Operating Committee of Alexandra, Midrand, Sandringham and Sandton, the explosion took place at about 5.46pm.
“We are aware of an explosion on Bree Street in the Johannesburg CBD possibly on the gas lines underground.
“At this time we request the public to stay clear of the area to allow emergency services to attend to the scene,” said the note.
At the time of filing the report, no human casualties has been reported.
